Sonic the Hedgehog film Wikipedia

Hurst was contacted by Ken Penders, writer of the Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series, who had been alerted of Hurst's plans. Development for a Sonic film began in the 1990s but did not leave the planning stage until Sony Pictures acquired the film rights in 2013. After Sony put the project in turnaround, Paramount Pictures acquired it in 2017. Principal photography took place between September and October that year in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island. Following the negative reaction to the first trailer's reveal of Sonic's appearance in April 2019, Paramount delayed the film release by three months to redesign Sonic.

November 2019

The Sonic we know from cartoons and video games doesn't have a defined bone structure. The new take swaps out Sonic's muscles and joints for the more cartoon-like spaghetti arms and legs. During the late 1990s, Ben Hurst attempted to revive and properly conclude the animated Sonic the Hedgehog television series, in which he worked as a writer. Robby London put Hurst in contact with a Sega executive interested in the idea.

Sonic the Hedgehog (character)

Flashforward to the end of 2019, and there’s a new trailer where Sonic looks like how he does in the games rather than a nightmare hybrid who still persists in the meme space. The new and improved Blue Blur won justifiably skeptical fans back over, and the first Sonic movie went on to make $319.7 million globally. Hesse wasn’t the sole reason for the redesign and its subsequent popularity, but you can certainly feel his love for the character come through n the new look.

A Visual History of Godzilla Movies

On a fateful trip to Los Angeles, Baez met his now-mentor, designer Manuel Roa, who agreed to introduce Baez to famous Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez. The plan was for Baez to meet the world champion after a fight in Las Vegas and hand him a custom-made Baez champion’s jacket. Following the incident, Tom and Maddie decide to stay in Green Hills and let Sonic live with them, treating him as a surrogate son. The government erases all evidence of the events, including records of Robotnik's existence. Some time later, Robotnik, who is still in possession of Sonic's quill and usable equipment salvaged from the remains of his hovercraft, plans to return to Earth and get his revenge against Sonic. As Sonic prepares to leave, Tom discovers him in his shed and tranquilizes him.

In the clearest indication of the seriousness with which the studio has processed escalating fan toxicity, Paramount pushes Sonic’s release date to February 14, 2020 to “make Sonic just right,” according to another Fowler tweet. The American comics published by Archie Comics, Sonic the Hedgehog (1993–2017), Sonic X (2005–2008), and Sonic Universe (2009–2017) are based on the settings established by earlier animated TV series, the ABC "SatAM" cartoon, the Sonic X anime, and an expansion to the series, respectively. The former series is currently the second longest-running licensed comic series in the history of American comic books, second only to Marvel's Conan series (first issue released in 1970).In France two comic books named "Sonic Adventures" were published by Sirène in 1994. Sonic's first shown appearance in a video game was in the 1991 arcade racing game Rad Mobile, as a decorative ornament hanging from a rearview mirror.[34] This was followed by an unlicensed appearance in The Adventures of Quik & Silva as a villain. Sonic's first playable appearance was in the platform game Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, which also introduced his nemesis Dr. Robotnik. His two-tailed fox friend Tails joined him in the game's 1992 sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Life

Sonic Adventure marks the first game that features a modern Sonic. Artist Yuji Uekawa was in charge of his makeover, and because of the Dreamcast's new technical abilities, he found himself with many challenges to overcome. This version of Sonic the Hedgehog proved to last throughout most of the '90s. While Sonic's first game came out in 1991, the character's first appearance was in a racing game called Rad Mobile.

But, thankfully, that soon changed to Sonic, as Naka was keen on making a game that featured supersonic speed. Artist Naoto Ohshima and programmer Yuji Naka were tasked with creating a new mascot for Sega, a video-game company that was emerging as a popular contender to Nintendo. They held a competition within the company, which got them a bunch of characters to choose from, including this Teddy Roosevelt-looking man in pajamas who was ultimately used as the basis for Sonic's nemesis, Dr. Eggman. The six-octave vocal range opera singer made no apologies all season for her bigger-than-life personality and stage presence.

The most noticeable difference between their first and second take is Sonic's eyes. Much like Sega's design, Sonic's eyes are much bigger in the new version. In the old one, his eyes were shrunken to make them more anatomically similar to an actual hedgehog.

Sonic games since then haven't delineated too much on his design. In 2006, however, Yuji Naka wanted to create a Sonic game with a more realistic tone. The game, simply called Sonic the Hedgehog, reintroduced the concept of another human love interest for Sonic. To double down on this new Western coolness, Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001 gave Sonic shoes that looked more like American sneakers. Much like the old version of Sonic, this new version was featured in peripheral TV shows and comics. Sonic wouldn't see a truly major design change until 1998, with the release of Sonic Adventure on the Sega Dreamcast.

His disturbing humanlike teeth are now hidden beneath his upper lip. They made his mouth more animated, so it can shift to the side instead of being anchored down to the front. Paramount's new design fades Sonic's blue fur into his tan mouth for a slightly more realistic depiction.

The film was directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. It stars Ben Schwartz (as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog), James Marsden, and Jim Carrey. The plot follows Sonic, a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds, who teams up with a town sheriff to stop mad scientist Dr. Robotnik. Sonic the Hedgehog premiered at the Paramount Pictures studio lot on January 25, 2020, before its theatrical release in the United States on February 14, and received mixed reviews from critics.

sonic old design

Of all the things that weirded me out with the original Sonic design, the one that really bothered me was Sonic's oddly lanky frame. Like most of these decisions made on the first go round, I'm sure it made sense at the time. Sonic is a runner, so giving him long legs makes sense, but, as is obvious here, it just don't work in practice. He also appears to have human feet, as defined by the fact that he's wearing normal sneakers. The head has been shrunk horizontally and enlarged a bit vertically. This has the effect of making the eyes rounder, which makes Sonic automatically more friendly looking.

In May 2019, it was announced that Sonic The Hedgehog had been pushed back from its original release date in November to a Valentine's Day spot in 2020. As the movie releases worldwide, here's everything you need to know about its tumultuous journey to cinemas... Numerous beloved franchises have made the leap to the big screen, from Resident Evil to Super Mario Bros, but not a single one has been able to generate anything close to critical acclaim. What really freaked fans out about Paramount's first take was that they gave him joints and muscles, like knees, elbows, and calves. As part of your account, you’ll receive occasional updates and offers from New York, which you can opt out of anytime. So where did Sonic go wrong in so many of the ways that last year’s Warner Bros. adaptation of the Pokémon spinoff Detective Pikachu didn’t?

She made it all the way to the finale, but lost to Nymphia Wind in the final lip-sync battle. Muse, who finished ninth this season, is Afro Panamanian by way of New York. She and fellow contestant Geneva Karr are the first DACA recipients to be on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” In the season finale, Cristál and Muse were named “Miss Congeniality,” the first time two people had shared the award in the show’s herstory.

Sonic's design was influenced by a variety of sources, including Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, Michael Jackson, and Santa Claus; his pigmentation was chosen to match Sega's cobalt blue logo. Sonic was redesigned by Yuji Uekawa for Sonic Adventure (1998) to suit the franchise's transition to 3D computer graphics, with a more mature look designed to appeal to older players. Jun'ichi Kanemaru voices Sonic in Japan, while his English voice has been provided by Ryan Drummond, Jason Griffith, and Roger Craig Smith. In the end, it appears the outcry was justified and the re-work was worth the effort. The strong support for the film also proves that the Sonic story resonates with a new generation of game and movie enthusiasts. The revamped Sonic looks much better, but there are still a few differences.

Long Beach Island, NJ

According to volunteers at the Aquarium of the Pacific, there have been gray, sperm, humpback, blue, fin, and Minke whales sighted on their whale watching tours. There have also been rare glimpses of pygmy sperm, pilot, killer, false killer, Cuvier's beaked, and Stejnegers beaked whales in the San Pedro Channel off the SoCal coast. Gray whales, the most prevalent of the species cleaving our waters, migrate 6,000 miles south every October from their feeding grounds in the Bering Strait to mate and calve in the warm lagoons of Baja, Mexico. Prime whale watching season is from January through April when the mamas return north with their young. Gray whales get to be about 52 feet long and are a splotchy gray and white due to parasites that attach to them in the warm water and fall off again when they head north. In the summer, another rarer species, the North Pacific Blue Whales, have been migrating along the west coast since 2007.

The lengthy Redondo Beach Pier always seems to make headlines for close-to-shore whale sightings. But that doesn’t mean you can just stroll out onto the pier on a daily basis and see humpbacks breaching or pods of killer whales swimming by. Redondo is, however, still a useful destination for those looking to launch out of the South Bay. And there’s a list of pastas, most of them familiar, but the fettuccine with portabello mushrooms is distinctive. The mushroom slices are have a smoky flavor--hey, maybe they’ve been grilled over red oak.

Law that ended single-family zoning is struck down for five Southern California cities

You can catch boat tours departing from the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach or from facilities in Redondo Beach, Newport Beach, Dana Point, and San Pedro. Alternatively, you can often catch a glimpse of whales right off the coast along the Pacific Coast Highway; either way, the ocean-enthusiast in your family is sure to enjoy a diversion to see these huge aquatic animals in person. We’d suggest cruises out of L.A.-area and Orange County harbors for most Angelenos, but consider a trip up the coast worthwhile if you’d like to add a brush with the scenic Channel Islands to your whale watching itinerary. If you’re looking for unique date ideas or ways to entertain the family, these outdoor activities are something to remember.

During the summer, blue whales begin to skim our shores, as do humpbacks, who stick around into the early fall. Discover the allure of Long Beach Island, a premier vacation destination featuring charming towns like Barnegat Light, nestled on the northern tip. Embrace family-oriented bliss with attractions like Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, offering lighthouse climbs and scenic picnics. Further north, Harvey Cedars beckons with serene beaches and diverse summer accommodations, providing a tranquil escape. In the heart of LBI, Surf City becomes a vibrant hub, boasting a bustling Boulevard with endless shopping and dining options for day trippers and extended vacationers alike.

You can choose between different types of excursions, like luxury catamaran cruises and sunset tours. There’s even a high-speed sailboat tour with a submarine-like viewing pod for you to experience marine life below water as you cruise around the coastline. Many species of whales can be seen off the coast of California year-round, but especially during the winter and summer migratory seasons.

The blue whale is the largest mammal that ever lived, bigger than any dinosaur remains that have ever been found. They grow to 108 feet and weigh up to 190 tons (380,000 pounds). If you're out on the ocean, you can look for flat patches on the water, which indicate that the whale is about to surface. You can also follow groups of birds diving for fish, which is a good indication that dolphins, sea lions, or even whales are probably feeding there, too.

That said, you can still find a few boats in search of sea lions, dolphins and sometimes whales. Another whale species you might see in the off-season is the humpback whale, whose adults range in length from 40 to 50 feet and often appear from April to June. These whales are particularly acrobatic, so you might see them splashing about on the surface of the ocean in addition to coming up for air. Check for local whale spotting reports before scheduling a whale watching trip in the spring.

Be sure to take your camera or a pair of binoculars for getting a close-up view of whales and other sea life, but use your naked eyes first for spotting signs of whales in the distance. Since around 2015, pods of orcas, or killer whales, which usually migrate farther out to sea, have also been spotted on whale-watching excursions in November and December. Whether you're out on the ocean or along the coast, being able to identify what a whale looks like from afar will go a long way in getting to experience seeing a whale in person. Dana Point Harbor sits at the bottom of a bluff along an affluent stretch of the Orange County coast. Though cruises here can be a bit pricey, the whale watching tends to be pretty spectacular.

Whether you’re a quick jaunt from the ocean or making a day trip from Los Angeles out of it, here’s where you can go whale watching in Los Angeles, as well as a few spots in Orange County. We’re lucky enough to sit in the path of blue, humpback and, most notably, gray whale migrations. Gray whale sightings are pretty common, and particularly steady in early and late winter.

Maybe it’s perverse of me, but I prefer the regular grilled items. A sign outside the restaurant still advertises crab legs, and king crab legs are still a specialty here, smoky from the grill, served with drawn butter and very fresh green beans. At the southern tip, Beach Haven becomes a lively haven for busy families, boasting historical architecture and a vibrant atmosphere. Known for its myriad shopping, dining, and nightlife options, Beach Haven is a must for those seeking excitement.

The tri-tip seems the smokiest and the rich, meaty beef ribs the best. In the end, though, location cannot be denied, and Marina del Rey is still a beach town, with a beach town’s tastes. Santa Maria barbecue may be the unique deal here, but Washington Street B&G; moves a lot of seafood, just as the Black Whale did.

All of the Tide Table restaurants collective history goes back to clamming.

LAND LOVERS

Long Beach’s Rainbow Harbor is a popular spot to take a stroll or to board a cruise. It’s also home to the Aquarium of the Pacific, which offers combo museum and boat tickets through Harbor Breeze Cruises. I’ve had a great halibut in a smoky, tangy chipotle pepper sauce. This is particularly so among the appetizers, where you see the usual seafood nibbles, such as oysters and peel-and-eat shrimp (the latter arrive hot on a bed of chopped ice, but they’re more flavorful before they cool off). The menu boasts of a Really Good Crab Cake, which is at least pretty good, served on baby greens with a thousand island dressing.

It’s spring meatball season. Make these albóndigas de camarón

There’s a chocolate tart, which is like a warm brownie with an oozy chocolate center, and there’s a blast from the ‘80s, a chocolate box--a lidless box made of chocolate, filled with chocolate mousse and strawberries. The mudd pie is partly chewy, partly gooey and partly crunchy, but all chocolate. As for the Santa Maria barbecue dishes, don’t expect anything very exotic. They taste to me like very good California backyard barbecue stuff, particularly the pork ribs, only with a scent of red oak smoke.

Beach Haven’s neighborhood bar.

In between whale migrations, the whale watching excursions become dolphin and sea life tours, since half-a-dozen dolphin varieties, as well as sea lions and seals, can usually be found in our waters all year long. Of the other whales that may appear off the coast of southern California, fin whales are the most likely to appear year-round. Fin whales are the second largest mammal, reaching up to 88 feet long, and although they are endangered, their populations are spread out across many oceans and their migratory patterns are not well understood. As a result, you might only catch them off the coast of SoCal on occasion, and it could happen any season. We’ve also noted a couple of harbor cruises that, while unlikely to bring you near whales, will possibly put you near dolphins and sea lions for a fraction of the price. They’d arrive in Atlantic City for a night on the town and then voyage back under the stars.

Seafood Sliders

Sure, you’ve relaxed at the best beaches in Los Angeles and maybe paddled out to surf, but have you ever truly ventured out onto the water? Whale watching in Los Angeles is one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of the Pacific, not to mention the marine life that sits just below its surface. Up around Santa Maria, you see, at places such as the Hitching Post in Buellton, there’s a whole cult of barbecuing over red oak. So when you walk into the Washington Street B&G;, about the first thing you see (through a window) is a big flatbed grill with a winch to raise and lower the gridiron over red oak coals.

Some dove off the boat as it returned to the docks in Beach Haven. We have no idea who those people were. But when we opened our spot in 2005 on Centre Street in Beach Haven, a block from those docks, we knew we wanted to name it after the Black Whale Cruise. Before the Black Whale, we did fish. Opening the Black Whale wasn’t just an exciting new foray into running a local watering hole – it was part of the thriving Queen City, just far enough off the Boulevard, easy to duck into just off the beach.

Even when it's really hot at the beach, it's cool out past the breakwater. If you're traveling to southern California and are a fan of the open ocean and marine life, you can spend the day whale watching in Los Angeles and Orange County either on the coast or on a cruise of the Pacific Ocean. Home to chartered yachts and booze cruises, Marina del Rey’s boats are more catered toward leisure than wildlife spotting.

It’s served on a distinctive fresh home-baked bun, which has a chewy, bready texture. The shoestring fries that come with it may not be literally as thin as shoestrings, but they are fried properly crisp. They’re thickly breaded like old-time beach-town fried shrimp, and they’re unusual among fried calamaris in coming with mustard. The best appetizer is the mussels, which are cooked in a quasi-Thai style, with coconut milk, curry spices and chopped tomatoes.

Music studios

music studio design

When you work alone, you spend a lot of time moving about the room. This will allows you to precisely position your phone/iPad exactly as you want – no extra stands needed. Simply attach a dedicated mount – such as the  IK Multimedia iKlip Expand – to you mic stand it to your mic stand. So I’ll wrap things up 4 cheap and simple acccesories that will make things vastly easier for you – with very little time and effort. However – things can get complicated quickly, as your studio expands over time. Because playing both engineer and musician would require you to constantly jump back and forth between stations (which simply isn’t practical).

Instrument Microphones

music studio design

You get to learn, build your brand, and build your portfolio of work all while getting comprehensive education in audio engineering and production. Many of our students start working in the industry before they even graduate. East-West Studios is one of the most well-known recording studios in Los Angeles, with a working history of over 80 years and a massive colláge of influential artists who have recorded there. It comes as no surprise that the facilities are so perfect and polished. After opening in 1917 and successfully recording a plethora of well-known artists, Paramount recording studios stopped recording in 1932 then closed down in 1935 during the years of the great depression. A glass window arrangement allows for visual communication between artists and engineers during recording sessions.

Dolby Atmos Speaker Placement

In a studio apartment, even if you did everything above, you’re fridge will still be in your recordings lol. Or if you want to go the DJ/Producer route, being able to mix a song to test out in the club is a huge plus. In general, musicians are terrible at designing home recording studios. They often buy too much stuff that they don’t need and forget about the elements that are important such as soundproofing & acoustics. Home recording studios are usually just used by one artist and often only contain the equipment needed to record that one artist. That person, the artist, almost always lacks the skills of a good mix engineer.

You don’t have to go into extreme debt to go to Music Production and Audio Engineering School

From the technical aspects of room treatment, to the design of walls and panels (if they are required), everything is designed from the ground up and tailored to the individual needs of the client. Studios and recording spaces are usually more than a clinical space made for a specific purpose. We know that it is a space within which clients and collaborators need to feel truly comfortable in order to be able to express themselves fully. Whether that is having a jam with a drum machine or capturing a great vocal take in a dedicated vocal booth, we endeavour to create spaces that inspire, whilst being technically proficient.

Remember, maintaining an accessible and orderly environment can enhance productivity and fluidity in your musical workflow. Display vinyl records, vintage sheet music or old music books. They not only create a sense of history, but also a readily available library of inspiration. Shape and framing of the window can contribute to the studio’s overall aesthetics. This set-up encourages a space that’s not only conducive to creativity but also fosters an inviting atmosphere conducive to collaboration and relaxation. Feel free to post a photo in the comments below and I might add it to the main article if you would like me to.

Acoustic Panel Placement

Insulation is meant to go into sealed walls and ceilings. Recording in a small booth can result in a lot of low-mid and bass reflections. You can minimized this problem with acoustic panels. Most people just put foam in them but foam has less absorption under 500hz than acoustic panels. I’d suggest actual acoustic panels with velcro on the back unless your booth is really large to help reduce the bass.

The price of the keyboard is about the price of the keybed alone. They keybed is the best Fatar keybed but expensive. Most people buying a MIDI controller forget about the keys themselves lol.

Even most home studio users aren’t pushing them hard all of the time. I put 3x SSD drives in mine for 6tb of SSD storage and upgraded the ram to 32gb. I’m using a thicker Asus Rog g751 (pictured on the right).

music studio design

Luckily, most people selling items from their home studio and treating studio gear badly don’t even know what they’re doing is bad for the gear so they’ll probably tell you. The biggest issue with buying used recording gear is that with electronics, there is a lot that can go wrong or degrade over time. The newer an item is, the less likely this will be a factor but how it was treated makes a much bigger difference than even the age of the item. If you have flat desk, Iso-Acoustic Stands are better. If you have a rack desk and the speakers are sitting on top of a rack shelf, the Primacoustic stands are better. The reason is, the tweeter of the speakers should be at ear height and the Iso-Acousitc stands are higher.

Note, the MPC live 2 adds a few extra buttons and a speaker as shown below by the same dude since he posted the first comparison video. Unless you’re just a vocalist, you’re going to be placing instruments in your home studio. If you’re a guitarist, bassist, drummer, brass or woodwinds player, what to buy is pretty obvious. This is again, too colored for the Slate ML-1 mic but is great for other mics. Most guys doing rock love this preamp for it’s full, warm and if your face tone. The Neve 1073 is used on artists such as Mariah, Snoop Dogg and has been used just as much on pop, hip-hop and R&B records as it has on rock records.

Place all recording equipment and instruments in the most efficient positions in order to get the best sound results. When it comes to recording studio design layout, the first step is to pick the right room. It’s important to choose a room that can fit all the necessary equipment, instruments and players.

If you’re using or planning on using Presonus Studio as your DAW and you want an 8 fader control surface, this is the one to get. Or you can do what I do which is to run the Maschine or MPC software inside your DAW as a plugin / muti-output instrument and split their mixer into 16 outputs. This usually works fine for me as I mainly use them for drums and do the rest of my sequencing in my actual DAW so I don’t have a high track count coming from Maschine. If I need more I just add another instance of the plugin and you have another 16 outs.

The faderport is almost not a control surface at all. The reason I’m mentioning it is because it’s dirt cheap and aimed at home studio people who aren’t mixing much at all which less face it, is most artists. Most artists just want to record at home every now and then and aren’t going to spend countless hours mixing or learning to mix.

Szechuan Mountain House 川山甲 Review East Village New York

szechuan mountain house

It first launched in the East Village in 2015 and gained attention for its experimental, eclectic approach to the cuisine in New York. Soon after, a second New York City location popped up in Flushing, and a West Coast expansion followed this past summer in Los Angeles. Luo and Wang didn’t disclose specific further expansion plans at this time, but said that they generally hope to keep expanding across the U.S. “If there is a huge demand for Szechuan food, Mountain House will try our best to be in that location,” Luo says. “It feels really satisfying to be growing the company the way we want to be growing it,” Kramer said. In addition to newly focusing on catering, Kramer and Hymanson are planning multiple other Kismet Rotisserie locations, including one slated to open in Culver City this fall.

A Sought-After Sichuan Restaurant Arrives in Boston

In the near future she hopes to use the Porridge + Puffs space for occasional community-minded events such as cookbook dinners for guest chefs or potential collaborations with the nearby People’s Pottery Project. “I really wanted to stay true to our menu and not make any compromises just to please what we thought the local crowd would find acceptable. For us, this is what a modern-day Sichuan restaurant would actually look like in Sichuan,” says Zhu.

Szechuan Mountain House opens its first Los Angeles location, years in the making

In actuality, the ribs should be singular and the bun plural, since the dish consists of a single humongous beef rib, somewhat resembling the sort found at the city’s Texas barbecues. Alongside are the kind of folded, steamed bao you now see in nearly every Asian fast food spot. The meat has been cut from the bone, and it’s tough and gristly from being roasted too fast and too hot, which is why the same rib is cooked “low and slow” in barbecues. A new Korean fried chicken shop that uses rice flour for its coating is now open in Koreatown with a range of styles, sauces, sides and more. Rice Chicken, a new concept from Paul Kim, a former partner in Long Beach’s Ren Sushi, offers wings, boneless chicken and whole pieces available by the half or full dozen.

“Many people in the U.S. believe that Sichuan food equals red hot chiles and peppercorn. They think that they should be sweating and crying for help to extinguish the burn, but we want to show people that Sichuan food is more than that,” says Zhu.

Chefs Sara Kramer and Sarah Hymanson have debuted the second location of their California-minded rotisserie, Kismet Rotisserie, opening a walk-up window within Studio City retail center the Shops at Sportsmen’s Lodge. Restaurant is nearly two years in the making and features a transportive, serene aesthetic with fish ponds, trees, Chinese flower art, calligraphy and other touches inspired by Taoism utilizing harmonious layout and incorporating nature. The dining room is almost maze-like, with tables tucked into alcoves and in wooden structures; one table can be found under a small pagoda built for larger parties. The thought of Sichuanese cuisine brings to mind many adjectives, but “classy” is perhaps not the first. And fair enough; what mental image of Sichuanese food is more often conjured up than mountainous heaps of blood-red peppers, glorious waves of capsaicin-induced head sweats, and a conspicuous indifference to décor? Without denying its patrons either of the first two, Szechuan Mountain House, with its koi pond, bamboo groves, and delicately pruned bonsai, styles China’s most famous regional cuisine for the ambience-conscious age, happily challenging the notion that vibrancy of flavor must come at the price of presentability.

As the name suggests, the fiery cuisine of Sichuan — a province located in southwestern China — is the focus here. The group’s culinary director, chef Zhi Min Zhu, is overseeing the Boston menu, which includes many of the hit dishes found at the group’s other locations, including the crowd-favorite swing pork belly. The photogenic dish features thin strips of pork belly and slices of cucumber hanging on a wooden rod, suspended over a cup of minced garlic and chile oil dipping sauce.

A stone-clad koi pond and burbling waterfall confronts you upon entering the space. Enclosed bamboo booths trail off into an interior decorated with pottery and other elements, intended to evoke the eponymous mountain retreat. But far from mounting a menu obsessed with the rural or even the urban food of Sichuan, the bill of fare is an eclectic document. In addition to Sichuan standards and Sichuan-themed inventions, it borrows dishes from other regions, leaping from Hunan to Dongbei to Beijing to Hong Kong.

The group opened a stylish new spot at 89 Brighton Avenue, in Allston, in mid-November. Our guide to the best Italian restaurants in a city that has a lot of Italian restaurants. But the most exciting aspect of Szechuan Mountain House lies in the fact that the daring menu hasn’t been made blander for a perceived East Village audience, mirroring the sorts of experimentation and quest for novelty seen heretofore mainly in the new Sichuan restaurants in Flushing — and presumably, in China itself. The original Szechuan Mountain House was one among a raft of modern and more expensive Sichuan restaurants to hit Flushing during the last three years.

A koi pond, fake gingko trees and yellow lanterns lend an air of serenity to the dining room, in sharp contrast to the trial by fire your taste buds are likely to experience with several of Szechuan Mountain House’s signature items, which include traditional and modern Sichuanese recipes. For a walk on the mild side, opt for tamer delights like the twice-cooked pork, yibin-style ran noodles and the Insta-worthy swing pork belly. The signature dish at Szechuan Mountain House is liang yi pork belly, Zhu’s modernized take on a traditional Chinese dish. Liang yi, which translates to “hanging clothes” in Mandarin, is intended to evoke the image of laundry hung to dry on a clothesline. Together with a slice of cucumber, the thin pork belly is dipped in chile oil with a wad of minced garlic. The translucently thin slices of pork and cucumber are presented draped over a miniature wooden rack above a minced garlic and chile oil dipping sauce.

La-zi chicken, another Szechuan Mountain House specialty, marinates its diced chicken and deep-fries then stir-fries it with a small mountain of dried peppers, peppercorns and sesame. The menu lists dishes as either ma-la, traditional or modernist, along with categories for vegetables, soups, cold items and noodles and rice. Other hard-to-find Sichuan dishes on the menu include Qian Jiang-style chicken giblets with pickled pepper and mala chicken stew. Szechuan Mountain House also features offal like pig intestine, tripe, beef tongue, kidney, chicken giblets, curdled blood, and fish maw. There is also a wide variety of vegetables, as well as the popular golden baked salted corn kernels with salted egg yolk, which tastes like creamy, buttery, elevated popcorn, and an expansive vegetarian menu.

There are Sichuan standards, too, including twice-cooked pork, kung pao shrimp, and a ma po tofu ($10.95) that manages to taste better than any other with its silky tofu, earthy fermented bean paste, and daring oiliness. When it wants to, Mountain Szechuan can serve straight-up Sichuan, and it doesn’t stint on the peppercorns. Next up was mao xue wang, a stew of ox tripe, duck blood, and beef tongue—which, legend has it, was conceived by a butcher named Wang—that arrived burbling in a lavalike soup that packed the heat of firecrackers ignited on your tongue. Originally cooked during the nineteen-forties by laborers near the meat markets along the Yangtze River, who couldn’t stand to see the gristle and offal go to waste at the end of the day, mao xue wang became the regional chop suey of the working class.

The 3,000 square-foot, 47-seat restaurant is designed in the restaurant group’s signature upscale style, boasting classic Chinese ink paintings and calligraphy on the walls, flower art, and illuminated koi floats suspended from the ceiling. “Each Mountain House location keeps our core aesthetic,” brand operations manager Ariala Luo says. To be the finest food city in the country and might be biased on that count but doesn’t believe she’s wrong. Aviad “Avi” Yalin’s Avi Cue pop-up, serving shawarma roasted on a spit imported from Israel, has taken over the former Tacos 1986 location in Studio City, running as a three-week pop-up with the possibility of permanent extension (follow Avi Cue on Instagram for updates). Yalin began pandemic-spurred Avi Cue roughly four years ago, consistently drawing lines of fans for fresh pita stuffed with shaved and ground wagyu. With a bricks-and-mortar location, Yalin is offering new, larger pita and additions such as fries, loaded shawarma fries and imported Israeli fruit juice. Zhu says that they take great care in the selection of peppercorns, all of which are grown in Sichuan. It is not out of the ordinary to use more than 20 different kinds of spices for a particular dish.

A reboot of a Chinatown spot that closed decades ago, Hwa Yuan serves great Peking duck, sesame noodles, and more in a massive space on East Broadway. Opening on an interior courtyard of a new shopping and hotel complex off Prince Street, Szechuan Mountain House was an instant hit among well-heeled dating couples out for an evening of innovative food in a romantic atmosphere. It grabbed the second-floor space formerly occupied by Grand Sichuan, itself an early advocate of the Sichuan peppercorns that have become ubiquitous in the neighborhood. “I’ve always enjoyed preparing spicy dishes to share with others since I was a child, which is why I chose to be a chef,” Zhu told The Times in an email. Bring a group to this crowd-pleasing Midtown restaurant and share a bunch of dim sum and Szechuan dishes. Szechuan Mountain House, an award-winning New York City-based restaurant group with a devoted fan base, has landed in Boston.

Rice chicken also offers fried chicken sandwiches, salads, cup-bap in spicy pork, beef bulgogi and other options, and sides like corn cheese, fried sausage and tteokbokki. The ma-la dishes feature the hot-and-numbing peppercorn that’s emblematic of the cuisine. But not all of Zhu’s cooking features its spicy heat and anesthetizing effect. Sautéed vegetables and especially the dishes from the “traditional cuisine” menu, such as braised pork atop shredded, preserved vegetables, showcase the flavors of the region without chiles. While the focus remains on Sichuan cuisine, along with most of the small chain’s iconic dishes, some recipes and ingredients have been altered for the Los Angeles location to utilize more local ingredients. The signature fried rice is ramified with mustard greens, while a dish of fried lotus roots and celery provides a spectacular snap that you can hear as diners around the table attack it, with a subtle flavor that you’ll dream of that evening.

Some other classics include Sichuan dishes like mao xue wang, a stew of ox tripe, duck blood, beef tongue, chicken gizzard and other offal simmered in a peppercorn and chile-laced broth. The crispy free-range laziji chicken is stir-fried with dried chiles, dried Sichuan chile peppers, spicy bean paste, garlic, ginger, and topped with toasted sesame seeds and sliced spring onions. After opening a local chain of ramen shops, chef Ryohei Ito recently expanded his Rakkan empire with a new izakaya-inspired restaurant downtown. Housed in the former Fundamental space, Rakkan Miso Izakaya serves a limited selection of the plant-based-broth and noodles in which Rakkan Ramen excels, but a range of new items are also on offer.

The focus here is on grilled meat, seafood and vegetable skewers such as chicken thigh, Hokkaido scallop, sausage and tofu, plus popular, classic izakaya items such as karaage, katsu and donburi. A selection of hosomaki, nigiri and other sushi is also available, as is natural wine, beer, sake and a menu of sake cocktails. Also on the novel side are round shrimp fritters sided with sliced spuds, like pink ping pong balls with paddles; and planks of mung bean starch in chile oil and Sichuan peppercorns that wiggle and wobble in a glistening array.

East Village’s Newest Sichuan Restaurant Dares to Experiment

For all three diners, it was strange to see food that originated from humble peasants now nestled in opulent ceramic vessels that wouldn’t look out of place in the Forbidden Palace. “My aunt used to serve this in the same enamel basin she used to wash the vegetables,” the other Gen X-er, a Chengdu native, smirked. Peanuts are introduced to the usual ox tongue and tripe in chile oil, adding crunch to the slipperiness. Indeed, Szechuan Mountain House should receive plaudits for offering pig intestines and kidneys, fish maws, curdled blood, and the notably-named “strapping cattle throat” ($10.95) — rubbery white strips of integument that’s popular in Chongqing, a major municipality in southwest China. Some dishes require as many as 20 spices, with a rainbow of peppercorns imported from Sichuan for the job.

Cult-Favorite New York City Sichuan Restaurant Makes Its Los Angeles Debut

Zhi Min Zhu, who hails from Sichuan, is the culinary director of all the Szechuan Mountain House locations and is in charge of training all of the kitchen teams. Zhu has been working with Szechuan Mountain House since 2015 at the New York East Village location and has helped train the team at the new Rowland Heights location. This Chinese restaurant in the East Village specializes in soup dumplings, and it's just good enough to keep you coming back for more.

After establishing an ardent fan base with two locations in New York, Szechuan Mountain House has opened in Rowland Heights. Szechuan Mountain House offers popular Sichuan favorites like mapo tofu, twice-cooked pork, and kung pao shrimp, as well as classic Sichuan dishes seldom seen on menus in the U.S. Diners will be surprised by the Yibin-style ran noodles, also known as burning noodles, which are chewy, dry noodles that are flavorful, spicy, and salty from cardamine bean sprouts and roasted nut powder. The name “burning noodles” comes from the fact that traditional cooking methods add lard and chile oil to the noodles, which can be ignited without the use of water. In decades prior, people would light up the noodle as a wick for kerosene lamps.

Eschewing the bursts of red and communal tables of their predecessors, these places flaunted stylish interiors with intimate seating. Some featured rustic elements meant to evoke Chinese villages; others were more East Village-y, with exposed concrete surfaces, deejays, and futuristic light fixtures. After reopening her celebrated porridge-based restaurant last month, chef Minh Phan decided to close Porridge + Puffs after all. The Historic Filipinotown restaurant opened in 2018 but began years prior as a pop-up. Jonathan Gold called Phan’s porridge bowls colored with pickles, jammy eggs, flowers and other culinary delights “as dazzling in its complexity as anything coming out of the most famous kitchens in town.” After a pandemic-spurred closure in 2021, Phan reopened the restaurant this year.

Their swinging pork belly dish has mandolined strips of meat and cucumber draped over a wooden stand, with the whole thing dangling above a bowl of garlic and chili oil. Once it arrives at your table, it’ll first get your attention for presentation, and then for being your new favorite way to eat pork belly. Order that, the pepper lover chicken that has some decent spice without setting your tongue on fire, and a couple of other plates to celebrate crushing the first half of the workweek. Makers Empire

The fact that CATIA is being used by some of the biggest tech and manufacturing companies out there makes it the most accurate and smart choice. In the heart of nTopology, lies its implicit modeling engine — a technology that describes solid bodies as (relatively) simple equations. When combined with nTop’s GPU acceleration for visualization technology, you can generate on your screen very complex geometries near-instantly that take minutes in other software. And the simulation feature enables users to test their project’s design for performance and functionality before implementing and starting the development phase. Note that these software are ranked in no particular order; however, they have the most desired specs and features that you need to get your 3D printing going in no time. It’s perfect if you want to 3D print an object without the need to create complex designs, but not too much if you want to make designs from scratch.

SolidWorks [Design]

For the $150 purchase price you get to use Simplify3D on two separate computers. Optimized support settings lead to better parts overall as parts keep their shape during printing, and have better surface finishes afterwards if supports can be removed more easily and without damaging the part. Overall, it’s the most widely used, free 3D printing software for a reason, and millions of budding makers use Cura to realize their 3D dreams. Pinshape is a family-friendly STL file hosting site with mainly free 3D models, but also features premium models you’ll need to pay to download.

Known for its versatility, Slic3r can be easily integrated into OctoPrint, the 3D printing host program we discuss more later in this article. It even works with resin 3D printers as well as FDM printers, so you don’t need to use a resin 3D slicer if you have Slic3r. Nerds will love some user-uploaded attempts to replicate Batman’s grenade launcher, the 3D printable battle scene from the Avengers, or even a Buddha status with Yoda’s head – because why not? There’s a huge variety of great files and projects here, and you also have the option to pay a small fee (usually a few dollars) for premium 3D files. You have far more control over the types of shapes and geometries with FreeCAD, such as in the advanced creation of curves and boundaries.

Buying Guide – Things to Consider When Choosing Free CAD Software for 3D Printing

Despite FreeCAD’s drab interface, the program is a powerful design tool that lends itself well to 3D printing. It’s also worth noting that some of Fusion 360’s features, such as simulations and multi-user management, are not available in the free version. Those who want to have the freedom to sell the designs they make using Fusion 360 can purchase the license at $70 per month. You can then refine your designs, see how they’ll appear in reality through rendering, and make modifications until they meet your vision.

Sketchup [Modeling]

Consider what file types a particular CAD software for 3D printing supports, especially export formats. This is especially important if your model includes overhangs, sharp outward angles, precise surface details, or requires support structures. All these add complexity to the printing process, and not all printers are up to the task.

Many advanced features, like simulations and a rendering studio for visualizing designs, are locked behind a $1,500 paywall as well. SketchUp is a popular 3D modeling software among working professionals, particularly in architecture and engineering. Despite this, we still consider it an easy-to-use CAD software that can be used for personal 3D printing projects. It has a good depth of features, and can handle any kind of slicing necessary for your 3D printing needs. Overall, Repetier-Host is a good 3D printing software for those with 3D printing experience, and who enjoy how well the full Repetier set of tools integrate together. You can precisely create rafts and brims, especially useful for tougher filaments like Nylon and ABS, and the previewing features can pick up things you might have missed that could cause the print to fail.

SketchUp’s free version provides users with the basic tools they need to create designs. The free version is able to import and export in different file types, but these are limited to SKP, PNG, JPG (for import), and STL (for export). Other important file formats such as OBJ, FBX, PLY, and more are reserved for paid versions. Fusion 360, from Autodesk, is one of the best CAD software available for hobbyists and design professionals. It contains many features and can be used for direct modeling, parametric modeling, and more. This 3D printing software includes advanced topology optimization features, the creation of internal lattice structures for lightweight yet strong parts, and a variety of other premium features.

It offers a set of powerful design tools that enable engineers and designers to meet high-performance product requirements. It is claimed to be compatible with more printers than any other 3D printer software, and is used in STEM education, rapid prototyping, and many other hobbyist and industrial applications. If it cost $500 for the exact same feature list, most people wouldn’t bat an eyelid. There are many different 3D printing CAD programs available that let you create your own designs from scratch, and each one has slightly different features.

The Complete Guide to Home Window Tinting: Residential Tint Types, Costs, Installation & FAQ's

house window tint

Remember, you must cut the film to the right size, apply it to line up perfectly with all window corners and edges, and smooth it free of air bubbles. Otherwise, the film will be highly noticeable, and it may not stay on the window as long. While you can do it yourself, you may get more attractive results by hiring professionals. Window tinting application is a home improvement project you can take on yourself. However, if your project is large-scale or you have minimal DIY experience, you may need to hire a professional. Tinted windows don’t reveal streaks or fingerprints as much as bare glass ones do, meaning they’re easier to keep clean.

Window tinting for your home & residential window tinting

The number of windows you want covered—and thus the amount of material you need—will significantly affect the total price. The price ranges in the table below assume a window tinting film cost of $4 to $14 per square foot and a standard window size of 24-by-36 inches—totaling 6 square feet of material per window. Here’s what you can expect to pay for window tinting based on the number of windows you have. For example, Solarworks Glass Tinting says not finding the right professional can result in a poor job or low-quality materials. Forgetting to clean the windows is a time-consuming mistake that is often overlooked in the excitement of a new project.

Which windows should I have tinted?

Many homeowners are interested in the heat-reducing qualities of window film. And solar films can block 99% of UV rays while allowing at least 80% of visible light. In other words, you can block almost all of the harmful sun while allowing most of the harmless rays. If you hire a professional to complete a tint job, they will most likely supply window film.

City of Yuma, APS and other local organizations participate in tree planting ceremony

Use soft cloths or sponges and non-abrasive, amonia-free cleaners. Be sure to follow the film manufacturer and installer’s recommendations. While security window film won’t completely prevent glass breakage, it makes it much more difficult for a potential intruder to get inside your home by breaking a window. Similarly, if debris hits the window during a storm or natural disaster, the cracked pieces of glass will hold together instead of shattering. While the above factors will definitely affect your project’s cost, the following will only apply to some window tinting upgrades.

Window Tinting Pros and Cons

Home window tints can look sloppy if done hastily and can be costly on some window types. One of the most significant benefits of window tints is their potential to improve your home’s energy efficiency. In the summer, the tint can block a substantial portion of the solar heat from the sun, thereby reducing the need for air conditioning. During winter, it can help retain heat inside, minimizing the need for heating. This energy saving may not only cuts down on utility bills but can also contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly home environment.

For those looking to decrease a potential break-in or ways to stormproof your home, you should consider installing a security film. While professional tinted window treatments can cost a pretty penny, they can also return that penny right back – and then some. Many home window tints help you control the temperature in your home. In fact, in some homes with lots of windows and direct sunlight you can save upward of 40% on your energy bill. Home window tints certainly have their benefits, but they aren’t right for every home. In fact, they aren’t even allowed or possible in some homes, as you will read below.

Tinted House Windows: Pros And Cons

house window tint

If you are seeking to prevent burglaries or break-ins through your windows, or clear visibility into your home, security window tint is a good choice. It could be the solution you’ve been looking for to add comfort to your living space, and add a touch of style to your home. When it comes to solar window film installation, you may be wondering whether to opt for professional installation or take the DIY route. While DIY installation is typically more cost-effective, there are significant advantages to professional installation that should not be overlooked. Professional installers have the experience and expertise to ensure that the job is done correctly and efficiently. But a meticulous DIY window film installation can yield similarly high-quality results.

Metalized films are typically made from copper, nickel, and aluminum, which block various light rays. Ceramic films don't contain the metals and dyes found in some other types of tints. If you decide on ceramic films, you'll avoid harmful metals and dyes, reduce UV rays and glares, and have a non-reflective tint. This durable option checks all boxes, which is why it is the most expensive type of film. Are you searching for a renter-friendly way to gain some privacy?

If you prefer, you can hire a window tinting company to apply it for you. You’ll pay more to account for labor costs, but you’ll benefit from the contractor’s expertise. If you want your residential window tint installation to last, opt for top-quality window tint film and consider hiring a professional window tint installer to do the job. This will help you avoid repeating the project year after year, or seeing tint peeling from windows around the house. One of the most significant advantages of window film is its potential to reduce home energy costs. In fact, residential window film can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% and yield savings of up to 50% on energy costs.

Are your windows standard, and somewhat traditional, or are they unique or custom? The prices above account for professional window tinting services, which usually come to $1 to $5 per square foot. Installation costs depend on your geographical area and its general cost of living. If any of this sounds like your situation, you should consider home window tinting. Decorative window tints are installed for the primary purpose of style and effect. They are installed for privacy, and also to give an alluring look to an otherwise translucent window. To ensure your house window tint lasts and performs well, proper care is necessary. After installation, wait a few days before cleaning to allow the film to adhere fully.

In this cost guide, we break down window tinting pricing details so you’ll know what to expect. Some professionals may undertake cleaning your windows themselves in order to produce an extremely smooth and precise finish. Some films require a damp surface, while others must be dry to the touch. Carefully read any instructions from your installation company or the directions that come with your product to ensure your windows are adequately prepared for tinting. Before tinting your windows, they must be thoroughly cleaned and prepped for treatment.
